Who is Joe Spreadsheet?
Me! I’m Joe Spreadsheet and I’ve lived in Nashville since graduating from college in 2013. Since then, I’ve worked for some of the largest employers in Nashville. A recurring thing I’ve encountered throughout my career is that a lot of people don’t know how to use Excel very well, and it leads them to wasting time spending hours on tasks that could be done in minutes. The heart of my career has been around identifying and improving these inefficient processes, including training people on how to use Excel better to do their work. In doing this, I’ve found that I have a passion for teaching, and for helping others to make their work easier and less stressful. I’m a big advocate for working smarter, not harder, and it means a lot to me to feel like I genuinely helped someone.
Why should I learn Excel from Joe Spreadsheet?
Because Microsoft Excel isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. It’s one of the most commonly used tools in your modern office gig, and knowing how to use it effectively will make your life a whole lot easier.
Aren’t there free ways to learn Excel?
There most certainly are! In this day and age, you can learn practically anything you want on YouTube. Let’s take studying a foreign language as an example. You can totally get started learning some vocabulary, pronunciation, and elementary grammar from just watching YouTube videos. If you want to take things to the next level, though, it’d be a big boost if you could actually practice speaking to someone in the language you’re learning. Talking to a native speaker or someone more trained in the language provides real world experience - the kind of experience that etches something into your brain. For some people, operating a Windows desktop environment and trying to do something can be like learning another language. To help you better learn and more critically remember certain techniques and skills, I make sure to use examples that draw from my own real-world experiences as a spreadsheet jockey.
